Dominican Republic - Katherine Garvey '16

Our goal is to support Yspaniola, an education-focused non-profit based in the Dominican Republic that works to increase access to high quality education for marginalized communities by supporting universal literacy and higher education.  In addition to working with children, we will learn about community development and contribute to Yspaniola's supplies and education programs.

The mission of Yale Reach Out Korea is to learn about North Korean issues and to engage in a cultural exchange with North Korean refugees living in South Korea. Our trip serves a two-fold purpose. The first is educational: as college students studying in the United States, we have limited resources to learn about North Korean issues. By visiting various NGO's and speaking with experts in South Korea, we hope to gain a deeper understanding of the political, social, and economic situation in North Korea.

Secondly, by partnering with Yeomyung School (여명 학교) in Seoul, South Korea, we hope to engage in a cultural with the students, all of whom are all North Korean refugees. As the majority of these refugees have been brainwashed from an early age to adopt an inaccurate view of the Western world, we hope to open doors of cultural exchange so that they may experience and learn Western culture through direct contact with our team of Yale students.
